Reasonable adjustments

We are committed to making sure that everyone can use our services, no matter what your circumstances are. One way we can make sure this happens is by making reasonable adjustments where you need them.

What is a reasonable adjustment?

Under the Equality Act 2010, reasonable adjustments are changes or adaptations we make to remove barriers and make sure that if you have a disability, you can access our services as easily as anyone else.

There are a wide range of reasonable adjustments that you can ask for and we will consider every request. Some examples include:

  • A change in how we communicate with you, for example by providing information in different formats and/or language.   Additional accessibility options are available throughout our website including an accessibility toolbar to help with reading text out loud, making font larger and changing the colour scheme and language of content.
  • Modifications to your home - further information can be found on our disabled adaptations page.
  • Texting you on arrival to your home
  • Offering to read information about your tenancy to you.
  • Leaving longer for you to answer the door or phone when we contact you.
  • Booking appointments for when a carer is present.
  • Allowing additional time as part of complaint investigation
  • Avoiding home visits at certain times of day due to health and medical needs.
  • Speaking to someone on your behalf about your tenancy.
  • Accepting repairs by email at housingrepairs@sholland.gov.uk where it is difficult for you to telephone us.
  • Communicating with you via Relay UK (a free service to help people with hearing and speech difficulties communicate with anyone over the phone. You don't need any special kit - just download the app from the App Store, Google Play or the Microsoft Store onto your smartphone, tablet, or computer).

How to ask for a reasonable adjustment

You can ask us to consider a reasonable adjustment in the following ways:

  • by calling us on 01775 761161
  • by sending us a letter or email at hadmin@sholland.gov.uk (don't forget to tell us your name and address).
  • by referral from a partner agency such as NHS
  • via a family member if you have permitted them to do so.

How we decide what is reasonable

The Equality Act does not define what is 'reasonable', but we will always consider these factors:

  • how effective it will be in preventing any disadvantage;
  • the practicality of the adjustment; and
  • the costs of making the adjustment.

We will always consult with you to understand your needs and preferences and involve you in the decision-making process around the adjustment.    When an adjustment can be provided or a change to a service itself is 'effective, practical and achievable within budgetary constraints' we will endeavour to implement the changes without delay.
