As the festive season kicks off many residents will undoubtedly be preparing for Christmas by finding the perfect place to celebrate with friends and family. South Holland District Council is encouraging residents to 'look before you book' using published food hygiene ratings.

The number of businesses with top-ranked Food Hygiene Ratings in South Holland remains at an all-time high, with latest figures showing the percentage of venues with 3 (satisfactory) 4 (good) and 5 (very good) ratings is at 99.9 per cent, whilst there are still no businesses with the lowest ranking of zero.

The ratings are determined following an unannounced visit by local authority food safety officers, who follow national guidelines and are trained to make sure ratings are accurate and customers have peace of mind that they are receiving safe hygienic food.

Despite the fact that food lovers have plenty of excellent options to choose from across the District, the Council would like to remind residents to look out for a food venue's Food Hygiene Rating, to do this visit Food Standards Agency website.

For those out and about check for the green and black sticker which is usually on display in a front window or on a wall. If you can't see one, just ask.

Cllr Anthony Casson, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection said: "We pride ourselves in South Holland on our amazing local eateries, few places in the country can say that 99.9% of their food venues are rated 3 (satisfactory) and above."

"Our Food, Health and Safety team work hard to ensure that our high standards are maintained across the district by carrying out regular inspections, as well as offering advice and guidance on good hygiene practices."

"A good Food Hygiene Rating is something that every food venue can be proud of, providing residents with welcome reassurance and therefore we'd like to encourage all our local eateries to display their rating and have a prosperous festive season."
