Register to vote

The Electoral Register is the list of everyone in the South Holland district who is entitled to vote. It is usually published every year on 1 December and is also updated monthly.

Annual Canvass registration

Between July and November each year, the annual canvass takes place and contact is made to every household in the district, either via email, telephone or post. This data is then collated and other relevant forms sent to publish the final register on 1 December of that year.

Rolling registration

It is now possible to change your details on the register, for example if you move house during the year. This means that you don't have to wait until the annual canvass.

Register to vote

  1. Visit GOV.UK to register to vote online (opens new window)  
  2. on the above link, you'll need to complete your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You'll also need your national insurance number, which can be found on your national insurance card or on official paperwork such as pay slips, or letters about benefits or tax credits
  3. be sure to check your email or post for a confirmation to say you're registered.

About the Electoral and Open registers

There are two versions of the register; the electoral register and the open register. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose to exclude details from the open register by choosing to 'opt out'.

  • The electoral register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit.
  • The open register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.

Register of Electors

To be included in the Register of Electors, a person must:

  • be resident at an address in the District on the date of application, and 
  • be 18 years of age or over during the period when the register is in force, and 
  • be a British, other Commonwealth, Irish Citizen or a citizen of another member state of the European Union. Citizens of European Union Member States (other than British and Irish) will be registered to vote at local elections. However, they may additionally make a separate application to register to vote at European Parliamentary elections.

Register costs

The full version of the Electoral Register and list of overseas electors is only available for sale to credit reference agencies and government departments who can only use it for purposes specified in law.

The open version of the Register, which omits the names of any electors who have requested to be excluded from this version, is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose.

The cost of purchasing electoral register information is as follows:

  • For data format - flat rate of £20 plus £1.50 for each 1,000 entries (or remaining part of 1,000 entries)
  • For printed format - flat rate of £10 plus £5 for each 1,000 entries (or remaining part of 1,000 entries)
