What happens once I have registered?
If your application is valid and not subject to any objections, we will write to tell you that you will be added to the electoral register.
If we are unable to verify your details or need further clarification after your application is received, we will contact you:
- either to clarify any element of your application
- or to ask you to provide documentary evidence, such as a copy of a passport or driving licence, to support your application
A monthly notice of alteration is published every month between January and November and the cut off deadline for each monthly alteration is set in law.
It may also take some time for credit reference agencies to update their records after they receive the monthly update files.
A full revised register is published on 1 December every year following the annual canvass.
Annual Canvass registration
Between July and November each year, the annual canvass takes place and contact is made to every household in the district, either via email, telephone or post. This data is then collated and other relevant forms sent to publish the final register on 1 December of that year.
About the Electoral and Open registers
There are two versions of the register; the electoral register and the open register. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose to exclude details from the open register by choosing to 'opt out'.
- The electoral register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit.
- The open register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.
