Garden Waste Scheme FAQs

  • How much does the garden waste scheme cost?
The standard charge is £57 to collect your garden waste in a brown wheeled bin and a £17.50 charge to cover the delivery, repairs and loan of the bin, newsletters and further offers.

Subject to collection constraints, second wheeled bins will be available for £33 for a period that ends at the same time as the first wheeled bin subscription. Households may sign up for a maximum of two wheeled bins. If two wheeled bins are requested at the same time they will both be delivered for the £17.50 charge.

    No concession rates are available.

  • How many collections do I get for my garden waste subscription?
Subscriptions run for a 12 month period of 24 fortnightly collections. No collections will be made over the Christmas and New Year period.

As part of your subscription you will be provided with a collection start date. Please see the collection calendar for all collection dates.

  • What size is the garden waste bin?
240 litres in capacity and the dimensions are; width 580mm / height 1100mm / depth 740mm.

  • What can I put in the garden waste bin?
General garden waste, grass cuttings, tree and shrub cuttings, small branches up to 2 inches (50mm) in diameter, shrubs, leaves, flowers, weeds, prunings, roots and hedge trimmings.

No other materials will be accepted. Please do not overload the container as we will not be able to empty it.

  • How many garden waste bins can I have?
Households may sign up for a maximum of two wheeled bins.

  • Can I share a garden waste bin with a neighbour?
Brown bin(s) may be shared among neighbours; however we'll only collect garden waste from brown bin(s) placed outside the registered household. Any agreement made between householders will be deemed a private agreement; we will not be held responsible for disputes resulting from such agreements.

  • Do I need to be at home when the garden waste bin is delivered?
No. The brown bin(s) will be delivered within 10 working days of a successful application and left in a prominent position within the boundary of your property.

  • When and where do I present my garden waste bin/sack for emptying?
Bins should be presented by 7am on the scheduled collection day. Bins should be placed in a prominent and accessible position on the kerbside, but without blocking the pavement.

Bins should not be presented any earlier than 6pm the night before collection. Bins should be retrieved as soon as possible after emptying, to within your property.

Please note that the time of the day when collections are made may vary from week to week.

  • Can extra garden waste be put out alongside the bin?
No, only materials in the container provided will be collected. All garden waste to be collected must be loose and be within the brown bin.

Ensure wheeled bin lids are closed when presented for collection. Bags or liners (including compostable or biodegradable liners) are not acceptable and will be classified as contamination.

  • What if I move during my garden waste subscription period?
If you move house either within the SHDC district or beyond, you must let us know.

If you are moving within the district, then you may be able to transfer the subscription and take the wheeled bin(s) with you. This is providing that the property you are moving to is on a garden waste collection route. If you are unable to transport the bin(s) to your new address, delivery can be arranged for a charge of £10 per property (irrespective of number of bins).

If you are moving out of the SHDC district, the service will be cancelled, unless the subscription is transferred to the new occupiers.

If the service is cancelled, the bin(s) must be made available for removal from your property. No refunds will be issued due to moving house.
