Ways to pay us

We cannot accept credit card payments for Council Tax or Business Rates. You can use your credit card for any other service.

Online payments

Pay by Direct Debit

Direct Debit is the simplest way to pay your Council Tax or Business Rates as it's a convenient and secure way to pay. Find out how to arrange payment by Direct Debit.


Pay by automated phone

You can make payments or check your account balance using our 24 hour automated telephone payment line. Calls are charged at the local rate. Please allow up to three working days for payments to reach us. To use this service you will need:

  • to have your account or invoice number
  • a debit or credit card
  • a pen and paper to write down the payment reference number.

Just call 0345 340 9310 and choose one of the following options:

  • Option 1 for Council Tax
  • Option 2 for Housing Rents
  • Option 3 for Business Rates
  • Option 4  for Debtors Invoice
  • Option 5 for Housing Benefit Overpayment. 

The automated service will give you a payment reference number after a successful payment. We recommend you write down the reference number as this is your receipt and should be quoted in any correspondence with us relating to your payment.


Pay by monthly instalments

To be able to spread payments across 12 months, this must be requested at the start of the financial year (March/April). If instalment payments are requested after this time, the instalments will only be spread over the remaining months of that financial year. If you'd like to arrange a 12 month instalment plan, please call 01775 761161 and option four for Business Rates or Council Tax. When calling, please have your Council Tax or Business Rates account number to hand. 


Online banking

You will need to arrange a new standing order with your bank, or through your online banking. When setting up a standing order, you will need to state;

  • the amount to be paid
  • the date that payment is due
  • your invoice number, which is stated on your bill
  • our bank details.

Pay using a PayPoint store

You can pay us using a PayPoint store. Find your nearest PayPoint.


Pay at the Post Office

You can make a payment, free of charge, by cash, cheque or debit card at a Post Office. Remember to take your bill with you, to be able to make payment. The Post Office staff member will give you a receipt to confirm the payment. Please allow up to five working days for payments to reach us. 

If paying be cheque, these should be made payable to 'Post Office Limited'.
